Zubin Mehta was about to perform in India on the 21st and 22nd of November 2022 with the Symphony Orchestra of India, presented by the Meli Mehta Music Foundation and NCPA. Maestro Mehta is perhaps the world’s best-known conductor, with a reputation that extends beyond the concert hall. He’s known for his all-round musicianship and ability to motivate young musicians, and frequently conducts all major orchestras around the world, as well as opera productions.
It was earlier announced that world-renowned conductor Zubin Mehta will be performing in India in November 2022. This was a highly anticipated event. Maestro Mehta was born in India, calls himself an Indian, and still holds his Indian passport. He has numerous admirers in India and many of them have been waiting for the concerts in Mumbai this November.
As per the recent updates, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation (MMMF) has extended a note to inform everyone that the concerts with Maestro Zubin Mehta and the Symphony Orchestra of India scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of November have been canceled. They further shared that: The communication received from Maestro Mehta’s office states that “After an intensive period of obligations in Europe, the US, the United Kingdom, Australia and again Europe with several tours, Maestro Mehta needs to take immediate rest due to exhaustion for the coming three months. He regrets the inconvenience this causes to orchestras and institutions involved and, of course, his dear audience”. More information on the same can be found on the NCPA Website
Maestro Mehta is one of the most celebrated musicians in the world. He has conducted some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Mehta is also a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. This will be a rare opportunity to see Mehta perform in India, and it is sure to be a memorable event.

Maestro Mehta was born into a Parsi family in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, during the British Raj, the older son of Mehli (1908–2002) and Tehmina (Daruvala) Mehta. His native language is Gujarati. His father Meli Mehta was a self-taught Violinist who founded and conducted the Bombay Symphony Orchestra and later the American Youth Symphony, which he conducted for 33 years after moving to Los Angeles. His father had previously lived in New York to study with violinist Ivan Galamian, a noted teacher who also taught Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. He is the Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the English National Opera and Royal Opera House, London. From 1992 to 1996 he was the principal conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra), and artistic director (1987–1991) of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in Canada.
Zubin Mehta has been awarded numerous prestigious awards in his career, some of which are:
- In 1965, he received an honorary doctorate from Sir George Williams University, which later became Concordia University.
- Mehta’s name is mentioned in the song Billy the Mountain on the 1972 album Just Another Band from L.A. by Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention. Cellist Kurt Reher, who played when Mehta conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic, was also a guest musician with The Mothers of Invention.
- At the Israel Prize ceremony in 1991, Mehta was awarded a special prize in recognition of his unique devotion to Israel and to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1995, he became a Laureate of the Wolf Prize in Arts. In 1999, Mehta was presented with the “Lifetime Achievement Peace and Tolerance Award” of the United Nations.
- The Government of India honored Mehta in 1966 with the Padma Bhushan and in 2001 with India’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan.
